New York City 2016

Having spent a week in the Big Apple in 2015 on our honeymoon, when looking for something to do for the first anniversary a return trip to New York was in order. With only 2 full days it was to be a flying visit and in a city with so much to do it was to be busy schedule.

The food we ate is covered in other blog posts but a couple of highlights from the trip:

The High Line
A great place to walk, this disused railway track has been turned into a raised walkway/garden and although only a few blocks from Broadway it feels like a completely different city and even feels quiet. In summer, with the plants full grown, it would be really lovely but, even in December, it was a great place to wander for an hour or so, take in the views and look at the pieces of art dotted around.

This walkway starts at 34th Street close to 10th Avenue and runs around a mile and a half down to Gansevoort Street.

Walk through Waterfall

One of the best things to do in New York City is just to wander round because there’s so many things to see, both big and little. Every street seems to have something that tries to grab your attention whether that’s a man in a purple Santa outfit singing his heart out whilst driving in his convertible Mini, to the walk through waterfall next to the McGraw-Hill building on 6th between 48th and 49th.

Almost completely deserted, which in a city as busy as NYC is a rarity, a great hidden gem to check out.

The Christmas decorations

In a country often described as doing everything bigger, nothing seems to come bigger than the Christmas decorations and not just the iconic tree at the Rockefeller Center. There’s decorations everywhere and all of them have a certain class to them. No gaudy Santas here, so many trees in various buildings, nutcracker toy soldiers and classic American candy canes.

New York Knicks Basketball Game

It was a spur of the moment decision but we decided to try and get a couple of tickets to se the New York Knicks play at Madison Square Garden.  OK, so it wasn’t cheap and the price of the beer was really steep, but even if you didn’t like sport, it’s a great way to spend an evening and there’s just so much to take in.  We had the cheapest seats right at the top and the view was great and everyone was just having a great time.

For those who haven’t been, New York City is such a great place to visit and not only for those wanting to shop, visit Broadway and generally do the touristy things.  It really is the city that never sleeps and I think this also shows in that almost everyone could find something to do at any time, day or night.
